The Connoisseur Club began in 2019 as a Series of Spring concerts held at the Festival Station Office in the acoustically sweet music room. A flat price gained the patron entry to four spring events. The inaugural concert featured young cello sensation Cameron Crozman. Quatuor Despax. a group of siblings performed an exciting modern set, hot on the heels of their Music Scores sessions. Moshe Hammer followed a month later with solo violin and also promoting his own Youth Music venture “The Hammer Band” From Violence to Violins. Artistic Director James Campbell wrapped up the Spring Session with a detailed but informal discussion of the upcoming seasons highlights.
One concert was added in the Fall. The bar was substantially raised, as this performance featured eight world class musicians collectively known as Octagon. James Campbell says the group comes together every two or three years for a series of concerts when their combined schedules permit. Octagon is: Ken MacDonald, french horn; Kathleen McLean, bassoon; James Campbell, clarinet; Mark Fewer, violin; Martin Beaver, violin; Rivka Golani, viola; Rachel Mercer, cello and Joel Quarrington, double-bass. Composer Kevin Lau joined the ensemble and participated in discussions pertaining to his brand new piece “A Drop of Light”.
The Connoisseur Club has been an excellent opportunity for some of our local residents to attend a concert in a subdued setting and at a time when they aren’t as busy with their own seasonal responsibilities. The artists have been available to converse and answer questions allowing an extra level of intimacy to the proceedings.
