The Music Never Stops: April 14, 2020

Robert Schumann wrote the piece “Carnaval, Op. 9” which depicts numerous masked ‘characters’ at Carnival (a festival before Lent). It is hypothesised that Schumann may have had bipolar disorder; among these masked characters are “Eusebius” (Schumann’s calm, deliberate nature) “Florestan” (Schumann’s fiery, impetuous side). Both of these ‘characters’ are the theme of one of our concerts this season – check your brochures for more info! Today’s video by Leopoldo Erice features the character ‘Chopin’, an homage to Chopin who was a colleague to Schumann. See if you can hear the similarities!
