Stockey Young Artist
Festival of the Sound’s commitment to name annual Stockey Young Artists began in 2005, to recognize the generosity and vision of Charles and Lois Stockey, but our commitment to young artists began a decade earlier.
In 1996 the Festival’s “Discovery Series” introduced the works of young composer’s who took part in a residency in Parry Sound under the mentorship of composer Gary Kulesha. Over the next decade, Kulesha personally supervised and conducted workshops and performances of the music of three young Canadian composers per year.
The Stockey Young Artist Award is given each year to one or more deserving young Canadian classical musicians.

2024 Stockey Young Artist-National Youth Orchestra
NYO Canada was founded in 1960 by Walter Susskind, former Toronto Symphony Orchestra Music Director, to nurture outstanding young musical talent in Canada. Since then, NYO Canada has become Canada’s most comprehensive instructional program. NYO Canada has performed in every major Canadian city, Europe, and Asia, travelling to 12 countries and counting. This is the orchestra’s third appearance at the Festival of the Sound. Today, one-third of Canada’s professional orchestral musicians are alumni of NYO Canada. Festival of the Sound is proud to appoint all 84 musicians of the 2024 Orchestra as this year’s Stockey Young Artists.
Charles & Lois Stockey
Charles and Lois Stockey made significant donations to the Festival and the construction of the Stockey Centre. We honour their memory by supporting rising Canadian stars with the Stockey Young Artist Award.
