FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Since we invited Kevin Chen to be Stockey Young Artist this summer, he has won Gold Medals (1st Prize) at both the Geneva International Music Competition, and most recently the The Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. These are notable accomplishments for anyone, but when you consider Kevin is an 18 year old from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, they seem that much more incredible.
Part of his prize in the Rubinstein is an important recital in Tel Aviv which conflicts with his previously scheduled appearance at Festival of the Sound this summer. He has politely asked me if we could move his concert to an earlier date.
As Artistic Director it is a thrill to bring such a dynamic and assured young talent to our Festival audience. He is a very special young man who holds all the qualities we Canadians hold dear: sensitive, modest and open to ideas. Our policy has always been to help artists, particularly young talents like Kevin to further their career.
Please see pages 7 – 10 (July 25 – 27) of the brochure here for an updated schedule.
2023 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the Fiscal Year ended November 30, 2022, is scheduled for 5:00 pm, Monday, May 15. This meeting is open to the public. Members in good standing are entitled to vote on matters affecting the Corporation, including the appointment of Directors, the passing of Financial Statements, and changes to By-Laws.

If your membership has lapsed you must renew by April 15, 2023 to be considered “in good standing” for the AGM. Please visit the link below to make your donation and ensure your membership is paid up.

FUNDRAISING 2023
Sometime during the fall of 2020, after the complete cancellation of that year’s summer
Festival, I sketched out a drawing that caught the imagination of Artistic Director James
Campbell and the Festival board. The drawing uses the metaphor of a tree, to illustrate how the
Festival is deeply rooted in the town of Parry Sound, how the constrictions and belt-tightening forced on us by the COVID-19 pandemic could generate new
bursts of creativity, intentional growth, and renewed vitality; and how the planting of musical
seeds could ensure longevity for the Festival we all love.
Perhaps, then, it’s fitting that the theme of this summer’s Lobby Fundraiser will be
“planting musical seeds.” Just the other day, I was precariously perched on top of the giant
snow piles in the Stockey parking lot, snapping early spring photos of the magnificent white
pine tree by the water’s edge, which will serve as my inspiration for the fundraising display.
As in 2022, this summer’s Festival Fundraiser will be hybrid. There will be a crafty “analog”
display in the Stockey lobby, and also a parallel electronic version on the Festival’s website! You
will be amazed at how many musical seeds we’ll be planting!
VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION
We would not be the Festival that we are without the incredible time, effort, and energy our wonderful volunteers give all year! On Tuesday night we had an excellent Volunteer Appreciation Night for the Festival and Stockey Centre’s volunteers.
James graciously shared a wonderful, inspirational story of how a volunteer named Charles Stockey changed the Festival forever.
We are very grateful for all of the volunteers that contribute to the Festival’s success every year!
